NBN Could be a 'financial disaster'

Percy Allan, President of the Australian Institute of Public Administration and former boss of the NSW Treasury under NSW Premiers Neville Wran, Nick Greiner and John Fahey has today claimed the NBN was ill thought through.
He told Fairfax Newspapers: ''That choice might be to spend $36 billion ripping out copper wire and disconnecting Foxtel cables and starting afresh, which is the proposition we are facing. But had they examined the need, examined options and consulted they might have discovered cheaper ways to fill the need''

He also said ''If a lower than expected proportion of people end up subscribing to it because they don't want to pay Rolls-Royce prices for a Rolls-Royce service, this thing is going to be a financial disaster - watch public opinion then''

What a shame Labor ignores true experts and takes selective advice.

Better broadband infrastructure is needed, but this way seems rushed and far too expensive.

Note: Earlier, I had mentioned an NBN employee and linked them to this article. I accept that person had no connection to this issue. I apologise to the person concerned.

    1. your a loser. I made a number of comments questioning some your claims in you blog yesterday and they were all pulled. Seems like you are a hypocryte as you latest post promotes free speech. Also if you are going to delete comments rather than engage in debate or provide proof for the ridicluous claims you make what is the point of the blog. as I noted yesterday there is an inverse relationship between brain capacity and conservatism and by censoring peoples opinions whilst simultaneously asking people to donate to funds promoting free speech proves it. loser

    2. Interestingly, the comment removed above was attacking an NBN employee not me. I removed one of your comments yesterday in which you called another person ''pig ignorant''

Funny how yet again today you use abuse instead of argument.

  2. I'm sorry where did you mention in the article who the experts were?

    1. not really unless you mean Percy Allan. Please explain to us how he is an expert?

"What a shame Labor ignores true experts and takes selective advice."

What experts? What about the "experts" who say the NBN is a fantastic idea?

Or is someone only considered an expert when you agree with them?

    3. that is not an answer. I will ask again.

What about the experts who think the NBN is a fantastic idea?

Secondly is someone only considered an expert when you agree with them?

  3. Mr Allan offers no alternative solutions and I consider his comments politically motivated.

''That choice might be to spend $36 billion ripping out copper wire and disconnecting Foxtel cables and starting afresh, which is the proposition we are facing. But had they examined the need, examined options and consulted they might have discovered cheaper ways to fill the need''

Umm this is the cheapest way to provide nationwide, equitable access to all Australians including those in remote and rural communities. The private sector was never going to invest in infrastructure in these areas.

as for this ''If a lower than expected proportion of people end up subscribing to it because they don't want to pay Rolls-Royce prices for a Rolls-Royce service, this thing is going to be a financial disaster - watch public opinion then''

Mr Allan will eat these words eventually. As the fibre cable is going to copper wire, everyone will be using the system in one way or another. As for the pricing, internet access will be cheaper as people will be able to connect directly without having to also pay line rental. Further to this they will be able to use VOIP and hence never pay line rental again.

"What a shame Labor ignores true experts and takes selective advice." - What a shame the baggers (who do not understand how the NBN works) ignore the benefits and use selective evidence (which never stands up to much scrutiny) to back their arguments.

"Better broadband infrastructure is needed, but this way seems rushed and far too expensive." What would you suggest? Given the roll out is going to take 10 years I would hardly call it rushed.Once complete the NBN co will make a return and pay for itself. As it will assist in improving produtivity and therefore profit it will provide future govts with more tax reciepts.

I hav yet to see a single argument against the NBN that stands scrutiny.

Finally I note you have provided a link on Percy Allan above. He may well be an intelligent and qualified person but this does not mean he is able to provide a qualified critique on the NBN and like most critics he offers no alternative solution.

Its ok to barrack for one side of politics or the other but it surprises me that there are people who think the NBN is a bad idea. Surely you are able to see the good and bad in both sides and recognise that this will help secure Australias future....
